Caring for your crown
With proper oral hygiene, your crown can last for many years, depending on the condition of the original tooth. It's essential to maintain good care, especially at the junction where the crown meets the tooth. Our dentists or dental hygienists will provide you with a recommended home care routine to ensure both your crown and the surrounding area remain clean and healthy.
FAQs
How Are dental Crowns Fitted
The fitting process for dental crowns can vary based on the condition of the damaged tooth. First, we will reshape the tooth to ensure that once the crown is fitted, it aligns perfectly with the size and shape of your natural teeth. In some cases, a filling may be required to build up the tooth before fitting the crown.
To ensure your comfort, a local anaesthetic is administered prior to preparation, minimising any discomfort. After reshaping, we take an impression of the tooth and nearby teeth using a soft, mouldable material. This impression is crucial as it allows our skilled dental technician to create a crown that fits seamlessly and looks natural. If you choose a porcelain crown, we will match the colour to blend in with your existing teeth.
While your custom crown is being crafted, we will fit a temporary crown. Though it may not be as durable as the final product, it will allow you to chew without issue. Once your crown is ready, we will try it in place and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable bite. If a significant portion of the original tooth is missing, crowns can also be secured with a small peg in the root canal.
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are metal or porcelain sleeves that cover damaged or weak teeth, restoring their strength and appearance.
How are dental crowns fitted?
Crowns are fitted by reshaping the tooth, taking an impression, and creating a custom crown, which is then adjusted for a perfect fit.
Is the preparation for a crown painful?
Not at all! We use local anaesthetic, making the preparation feel similar to a filling. If the tooth has undergone a root canal treatment and lacks a nerve, a local anaesthetic may not be necessary.
Can crowns be matched to my natural teeth?
Yes, crowns are designed to match the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth for a seamless look.
How long do dental crowns last?
With proper oral hygiene, crowns can last for many years, depending on the original tooth's condition.
What should I do to care for my crown?
Maintain good oral hygiene, especially at the junction where the crown meets the tooth, to prevent decay.
Are temporary crowns durable?
Temporary crowns allow chewing but are not as durable as the custom final crowns.
Are crowns noticeable?
Our dentists strive to match the crown as closely as possible to your natural teeth in size, shape, and colour. While crowns can also be gold or silver, we typically place these at the back of the mouth.
How do I care for my crown?
Although the crown itself cannot decay, it’s vital to keep the area where the crown meets the tooth clean to prevent decay from starting. We encourage you to maintain thorough oral hygiene as you would with your natural teeth.
